Brigadier-General Fletcher

Commander 3rd Canadian Division and Joint Task Force (West)

Born into a military family in 1972, Brigadier-General Fletcher joined the Canadian Forces in 1989 as a Private with 762 (Reserve) Electronic Warfare Squadron. Eschewing radios for machine guns, he enrolled into the Infantry with the Regular Force in May 1990.

Brigadier-General Fletcher attended College Militaire Royal de St Jean from 1990-93 graduating from the Royal Military College in 1995 with a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation he was posted to the Second Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI), deploying to Bosnia with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) Battle Group in 1997.

Posted to the Infantry School in Gagetown, NB in 2000, he served there until returning to Regimental duty with the First Battalion PPCLI in 2004. Promoted to Major in 2005, he commanded C Company and deployed to Afghanistan in 2006. It was during this tour that he was awarded the Star of Military Valour.

Brigadier-General Fletcher attended the Joint Command and Staff Programme at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto, ON in 2007-08, graduating with a Masters in Defence Studies. Upon graduation, he served for a year as the Staff Officer to the Chief of Force Development at National Defence Headquarters. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 2009, he then served as the Executive Assistant to the Chief of the Land Staff.

From June 2010 until June 2012, Brigadier-General Fletcher had the privilege of commanding the First Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Edmonton, AB. Upon leaving the First Battalion, Brigadier-General Fletcher served as the G3 of Land Force Western Area (now 3 Division) in Edmonton AB.

Promoted to Colonel in 2013, he attended the National Security Programme at the Canadian Forces College. In July 2014 until June 2016 he served as the Special Advisor to the Chief of the Defence Staff after which he assumed command of 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group. Promoted to his current rank in May 2018, he assumed the duties of Deputy Commanding General – Operations with XVIII Airborne Corps of the US Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Brigadier-General Fletcher is returned to the Army of the West, and on 14 August 2020, became the Commander of 3rd Canadian Division.

Brigadier-General Fletcher assumed command of 3rd Canadian Division and Joint Task Force (West) in August 2020.
