Brigadier-General S.C. Hetherington, OMM, MSC, CD
Commander 3rd Canadian Division and Joint Task Force West
Brigadier-General Simon Hetherington was born and raised in Oakville, Ontario and joined the Canadian Army as an officer in the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery. He has served on regimental duty with light, airborne, and mechanized artillery units in Germany and across Canada. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in political science and a Master’s degree in strategic studies.
BGen Hetherington’s operational experience includes United Nations peacekeeping in Cyprus, multiple tours of duty in Bosnia, and three deployments to Afghanistan in various command and staff appointments. He has also participated in several domestic response operations.
He has commanded at every level from platoon to brigade group. Staff assignments include service as the Executive Assistant to Commander Canadian Army and the Army Director of the Canadian Forces Transformation Team.
Most recently, BGen Hetherington served with the U.S. Army as the Deputy Commanding General for Operations of XVIII Airborne Corps in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, overseeing the operations and training of the Corps’ four divisions and seven separate brigades.
Throughout his career, BGen Hetherington has been supported by his patient wife, who herself has spent many years dedicated to military families while working in the field of military family support. They are fortunate to have active, resilient twin daughters who are university students.
When not keeping up with his busy family, BGen Hetherington likes to relive his youth by playing guitar (albeit not very well) in bands that tolerate his mediocre talent.
BGen Hetherington assumed command of the 3rd Canadian Division/Joint Task Force West on Monday, July 11, 2016.
